Service Description

Considered one of the most breathtaking and raw routes in the Maloti-Drakensberg mountains, the Mnweni Circuit offers a challenging and deeply rewarding wilderness experience. This 3-day circular trek takes you through traditional paths shaped by livestock, past the Mnweni Pools, up the dramatic Mnweni Pass, and down the steep, technical Rockeries Pass. Along the way, you’ll witness towering peaks, sweeping valley views, and the revered Mbundini Abbey. Day 1: Warm-Up Through the Valleys Distance: 15 km Elevation Gain: 590 meters Difficulty: Moderate Start at the Mnweni Cultural Centre Drive through the Mabhulesini community to the trailhead Hike past livestock paths and scenic terrain Stop for lunch and a swim at the beautiful Mnweni Pools Reach overnight camp after a steady but manageable hike Terrain can be confusing due to multiple paths – expect some bundu bashing Day 2: The Big Climb – Mnweni Pass Distance: 12 km Elevation Gain: 1,500 meters Difficulty: Strenuous Start early morning to make the summit before sunset Climb Mnweni Pass, one of the steepest and most dramatic in the Berg Enter the Little Berg, then push to the top of the escarpment This is the most challenging and rewarding day physically and mentally Camp on top of the Berg with stunning views and isolation Day 3: Technical Descent – Rockeries Pass Distance: 14 km Elevation: Steep descent Difficulty: Strenuous Descend via Rockeries Pass—a technical, rocky route Requires careful footing and endurance Hike back toward the Mnweni Cultural Centre Ends the loop through rugged and raw terrain, closing the circle.
