Underberg

Underberg sits beneath the foothills of the Southern Drakensberg, surrounded by rivers, farmland and the high peaks of the Maloti–Drakensberg. The town is one of the principal adventure centres of the southern mountains and a major departure point for journeys up the legendary Sani Pass into Lesotho. 4×4 tours, hiking, mountain biking, fly-fishing, horse riding and birding all form part of the area's outdoor character. Underberg also provides access to some of the Southern Drakensberg's most impressive protected landscapes, including Cobham, Garden Castle, Vergelegen and sections of the Maloti-Drakensberg Park World Heritage Site. The wider Southern Drakensberg tourism region promotes the area particularly for hiking, photography, birding, fishing and mountain escapes. The town itself has developed into an important service hub with accommodation, cafés, restaurants, tour operators and outdoor businesses supporting exploration of the surrounding mountains. Together with nearby Himeville, Underberg offers perhaps the strongest combination of high-mountain adventure, rural hospitality and cross-border travel in the Southern Drakensberg.
