Winterton

Winterton sits beside the Little Thukela River in the foothills of the Central Drakensberg and is one of the principal gateways into Champagne Valley. Surrounded by farmland and backed by increasingly dramatic mountain scenery, the town marks the transition between the agricultural Midlands and the towering peaks of the Central Berg. From Winterton, travellers can continue toward Monk's Cowl Nature Reserve, Champagne Castle, Cathedral Peak and numerous resorts, lodges and adventure centres scattered throughout the valley. Although small, Winterton plays an important role in the region. It provides shops, fuel, restaurants and services to visitors before they travel deeper into the mountains. The Winterton Museum also introduces aspects of the area's farming, settlement and cultural history. Beyond the town, the surrounding landscape supports hiking, cycling, canopy tours, horse riding, birding, wellness retreats and family holidays.
